As one strolls along the pathway beside Kanu House, they are captivated by the diverse artworks on display.

People admiring the pieces, are approached by sellers who are trying their luck in selling a piece of art.

Peter Njoki ventured into portrait selling a year ago, after his previous business of selling second-hand clothes became unprofitable and faced increased competition.

While struggling to earn an income with the harsh economic times, he sought an alternative source of income to support his siblings and family.

Njoki notes that he carefully selects portraits that feature famous individuals, animals, or intriguing images that are likely to catch the attention of passers-by.

"When I choose a portrait to display, I ensure it is interesting and eye-catching for potential customers who are often in a hurry," he explains.

To enhance the appeal of the photos, Njoki and his colleagues diligently mount them in different sizes, ensuring they maintain their quality and visual impact.

According to his observations, there is a tendency among young women to prefer animals and intriguing portraits, whereas older women gravitate towards artwork depicting family unity.

As for the younger men, celebrity portraits appear to be their favoured choice. On the other hand, the older men generally exhibit more conservative tastes, although there are still some who are open to purchasing such pieces.

When asked about the most popular portrait, he reveals that portraits of the late American rapper Tupac sell more than any other piece. He plans to experiment with Notorious B.I.G. portraits, given their shared history, to see if they will sell as well as Tupac's.

Lucy Wanjiru, another portrait seller, began the business in December and observes an increasing number of people embracing these artworks.

She notes that many customers purchase the pieces to enhance their interior decor or give them as gifts to friends and loved ones.

Wanjiru reveals that the income from her business supports her family and enables her to send her two children to school.

"The portraits we showcase here are from four different people where we generate an average income of Ksh 1,500 - Ksh 2,000 per day individually," she explains.

She emphasizes the need for designated spaces within the CBD where people can sell their artwork. “Such spaces would create employment opportunities for young people and prevent the constant evasion of enforcement officers,” Wanjiru adds.
