In the heart of Nakuru, a bustling city adorned with modern technological marvels and sustainable innovations, a charming mode of transport has managed to defy time and thrive amid the rapid changes.

While Nakuru’s landscape is dotted with electric vehicles, the humble bicycle remains an enduring mode of transport.

The cyclists, commonly known as boda-boda riders are frequently characterized by their well built frames and sun-shielding hats, ferrying passengers on an extra rear seat attached to their bicycles.

We realized quite an unexpected detail that sets them apart - the ingenious method of rolling up their trousers, allowing their socks to play custodian, ensuring that the fabric never interferes with their cycling.

In an interview with Mtaa Wangu, Mr. Njenga, a seasoned cyclist, shares his remarkable journey of over 16 years in this dynamic industry.

For Njenga, cycling has evolved from a mere necessity to a thriving livelihood.

"My journey started with a modest bicycle inherited from my parents. Initially, I peddled my way to earning a living by selling beans and maize. Gradually, I transitioned into offering rides to people across Nakuru, which turned out to be more lucrative," reminisces Mr. Njenga.

The enduring appeal of the bicycle is not just steeped in tradition, but it also boasts an array of advantages, especially during the infamous morning and evening traffic.

"Riding a bicycle provides the freedom to weave through traffic. Employing proper hand gestures, I communicate my intended turns to fellow road users, ensuring a safe journey. During night time rides, I don reflective jackets to enhance visibility," explains Njenga, revealing the cyclist's code of conduct.

Another dedicated boda-boda rider, Mr. Jacob Otieno, lends his perspective to us, shedding light on the socio-economic dynamics at play.

Otieno affirms, "Ironically, the rising fuel prices have been a blessing in disguise for us. More individuals opt for boda-bodas as an economical alternative to conventional public transport. This surge in demand translates to substantial earnings for us."

Mr. Otieno also adds that the bicycle is quite cheaper to buy and maintain, compared to the motorcycle.

Speaking to Mtaa Wangu, Eunice Wambugu and Joe Litura, both residents of Nakuru say they prefer using a bicycle to get around.

“I prefer using bicycles whenever commuting to and from work as they are comparatively cheaper than other modes of transport such as using a Matatu or a motorcycle,” Eunice says.

While agreeing with her, Litura adds that the bicycles are convenient, as they drop him off to his exact locations, unlike Matatus that only stop at designated stages.
