Nakuru City Mums and Dads (NCMD) is arguably one of Nakuru’s largest online spaces.

The online group that boasts of 180,000 followers was started by Ms Whitney Maina, an entrepreneur who desired a community brought together by common interest.

Hence as a new resident, she figured the platform would help her familiarize herself with the happenings of Nakuru County. That is how NCMD was born

“I was new here (Nakuru) and wanted a platform where I could get insight on things like schools to enroll my kids, shops that sell affordable household items as well as recreational facilities and other amenities found in Nakuru,” she recalls.

Over time, the group gained traction and its motive shifted from just interaction to having an entrepreneurial perspective.

“Seeing how fast the group was growing, I decided to open Cosmic Butterfly company which is a marketing company offering social media marketing for companies and even individuals,” She said.

Through cosmic Butterfly, Ms Maina is able to provide a platform for businesses to advertise their goods and services at an affordable fee.

NCMD recently did the first-ever entrepreneurial awards in Nakuru, to bring brand visibility and recognize entrepreneurs who are performing exemplary well in their field. A total of 256,000 people voted on their website under the 18 categories.

“The NCMD awards will be an annual event running every October. This year’s winners in each category will receive a three-month free marketing by Cosmic Butterfly,” said Ms Maina.

Through the NCMD, Ms Maina organized a successful mental health walk aimed at raising awareness on Mental health issues.

In the coming months, the group is set to market Nakuru as the home of SMEs with the slogan ‘Buy Nakuru Build Nakuru’ and ‘Nakuru for Nakuru’.
