Wristwatches serve as essential timekeeping devices, but the wear and tear they endure often necessitate repairs, with some individuals opting to discontinue their use or acquire new timepieces.

In the watch repair space, Joseph Mureithi Njoroge stands as a respectable figure, having sustained a 43-year career in this field without regret, despite the industry enduring challenges.

Mureithi observes the evolving landscape of watch repair, highlighting a divergence between generations in their embrace of wristwatches.

He notes that the older generation continues to ardently use wristwatches, even considering repairs, while younger individuals lean more toward technology like smartphones, abstaining from the traditional timepiece.

"Due to the technology and innovations like the use of phones, younger people have stopped using wristwatches while the older generation still use the watches and are willing to bring them for repair," Mureithi says.

However, Mureithi points out that sentimental value still prompts some to seek wristwatch repairs, especially when they were gifted by people they hold dear.

"Over time, wristwatches have shifted from being symbols of class to becoming more of a statement or fashion accessory," he says.

Mureithi's expertise covers a wide spectrum of watch-related services, from replacing bad batteries, repairing watch faces, and overhauling inner watch mechanics. Offering simple and complex repairs alike, on both traditional and digital watches.

Despite the industry's challenges, Mureithi's passion for his work endures, and he highlights how it has provided for his family and enabled him to acquire land and build a home.

The 63-year-old notes that watch repair costs can vary, starting from Sh 200, depending on the extent of work required.

Mureithi encourages innovation among the younger generation in the watch repair business, suggesting diversification through the sale of new watches, watch spare parts, and even the exploration of wristwatch manufacturing.

This will be very significant in sustaining and revitalizing the traditional art of watch repair in an evolving technological landscape.
