Several Swahili food restaurants in Nakuru have either remained closed or partially open since the start of Ramadan.

The once busy eateries have been shut down in observance of the fasting period.

As the day goes on, non-Muslim customers have been left searching for alternative dining options during lunch time.

Well-known establishments like Jadid Restaurant have completely closed their doors, posting a notice informing customers that they will be closed for the entire month.

"Dear esteemed customers, As we are in the holy month of Ramadan, our Restaurant will remain closed until 31/3/2025. Thank you for your understanding and support. Wishing you a blessed Ramadhan," reads the notice.

Other eateries, such as Jamia Hotel along Mosque Road and Jamia Food Mart along Kinuthia Mbugua Road, have partially closed, operating only from 4:00 pm to 10:00 pm, with notices displayed to inform customers about the change and apologize for any inconvenience caused.

"Dear Valued Customer, Kindly note that due to Ramadan Fasting Period, Jamia Foodmart will remain closed for a period of one month. Doors will open from 4:00 pm - 10:00 pm. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. We thank you for your support and look forward to continuing serving you," the notice states.

While the daytime atmosphere has been quieter, the evenings are livelier.

As the fast is broken at sunset with "iftar," street vendors set up along the roads, offering food to those breaking their fast at the mosque and providing quick meals for customers after sunset.
