Joining a professional body is increasingly becoming an important step for professionals seeking to strengthen their careers, build credibility and remain competitive in a changing job market. ‎‎ “Joining a professional body is not about adding another line to your CV; it is about deliberately building your professional identity, network, credibility and long-term career capital,” Ndombi says.

‎‎He adds that professionals should ask themselves not whether they should join, but how early and how actively they can participate.

‎‎According to Ndombi, active participation is what ultimately separates valuable membership from passive affiliation. Consequently, professionals should attend conferences and workshops, volunteer for committees, seek mentors, contribute articles, participate in discussions and, where possible, take up leadership responsibilities.

‎‎Furthermore, professional bodies can help members remain relevant as industries evolve. Through conferences, webinars, publications, training and continuing professional development programmes, members can keep pace with technological, regulatory and market changes.

‎‎"This is particularly important in rapidly developing fields such as sustainable development, electric mobility and carbon markets," he says.

‎‎He notes that professional associations can also open doors that academic qualifications alone may not. Volunteering, presenting at industry events and contributing to professional initiatives demonstrate leadership, communication, initiative and commitment qualities increasingly valued by employers, clients and development organisations.

‎‎Moreover, active involvement helps professionals build visibility and a reputation beyond their immediate workplace. Such networks can become valuable sources of mentorship, employment opportunities, collaborations, fellowships and business partnerships.

‎‎However, Ndombi advises professionals to choose associations carefully. Rather than selecting a body simply because it has a well-known name, they should consider its relevance to their career goals, as well as the quality of its networking, certification, mentorship, training and leadership opportunities.

‎‎Ultimately, he says the best time to join a professional body is as early as practical, while the best time to become active is immediately after joining.
