As the sun begins to set and the rest of Nakuru rushes home, a vibrant culinary scene emerges in the streets of Nakuru with the various aromas enough to make you change course as you rush home.

From Monday to Thursday, the most common snack options are mahindi choma, bhajia, kahawa-mandazi and smocha (a smokie rolled in chapati filled with kachumbari).

The darker it gets, the more Nakuru’s air is filled with aroma from various mutura and virenje stands which are soon filled with swarms of people waiting 'kukatiwa ya mbao.'

As the weekend arrives, the party lovers awake with different snack preferences.

Apart from the smell of booze and different 'going out' fragrances, Nakuru’s weekend air is filled with the aroma of kachumbari, choma and fries.

One of the crowd favourites during the weekend are smokies, sausages, samosas and boiled eggs all of which are accompanied by kachumbari.

These are usually sold right outside most clubs in Nakuru, with vendors still catering to their very drunk customers up to as 'late' as 2 am.

Another late night snack option is nyama choma or kuku choma accompanied by kachumbari and either fries or ugali.

The best choma spots in Nakuru are definitely those along Kanu street and Nakuru's famous choma joint, Jimmy's.

From this self-proclaimed 'queen of sherehe', choma with ugali is the only proper way to lay a foundation in anticipation of a night filled with lots of booze.

And if you're not about moving around in search of some late night snacks, your best bet is food that's sold within the club you're parting at.

But in my opinion, nothing beats munching on a smokie pasua just outside the club, with your very drunk friends all while the chilly air hits you.
