Known as the month of love, February is not only welcomed as it signifies the end of the long month of January, but it is unfortunately also received with apprehension by a section of people due to Valentine's Day, a day usually painted red by lovers.

Here in Nakuru, the day elicits mixed reactions from locals, but one thing is guaranteed, the romantics at heart will stand out on this day as they come up with unique ways of celebrating the day.

For the lucky ladies, they can only hope that their partners have something in store for them.

It is also around this time that the popular song "Valentine's is coming where is your boyfriend" usually hits the airwaves.

However, unknown to many, is that this is not the reason why Valentine's Day came to existence. It was never intended to be a day of romance, where lovers spend the day expressing their love through their actions: gifts, surprises, fancy dinners and so on.

Instead, the day is is supposed to be a celebration of Saint Valentine. The day may have its roots in the Catholic Church, making it more of a religious celebration than a romantic one.

However, since Valentine's Day took on a romantic trajectory around the 14th and 15th centuries, who are we to argue.

This year, Valentine's day will be on a weekday, so here are a few things to do to make your significant other and friends smile.

1. Give them a bouquet of money.

You must have come across the phrase 'pesa ni sabuni ya roho'. If you want to get them excited, give or surprise them with a bouquet of money on this special day. This can be done with notes from Sh100 to Sh1,000.

2. Picnic.

You can never go wrong with a good picnic with some romantic music for the evening. Since the day will be on a work day, surprise her in the evening with a light picnic, a drink of your choice and some dinner for the night. Don't forget to get her some flowers.

3. Fly them to a romantic rendezvous.

This might be a bit of a hassle for employees to get a day off. But it can work for the self-employed. Book a flight to your dream destination and enjoy the day with the people you love.

4. Single's edition.

Who says that if you don't have a significant other, you shouldn't celebrate Valentine's Day? What about treating yourself to some self-love? Many restaurants will have a package for singles. Book a table and enjoy the day. Don't forget to pick up a little something for yourself.

5. Share with those in need.

While you are out having fun, remember those who have no one to look after them. If you have someone in mind, spread some love their way and make them feel appreciated this Valentine's Day. You can also plan this as an activity with your partner.
