Nakuru Town West Sub-County Police Commander Anderson Njagi has confirmed that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has forwarded their findings on the disappearance of a 7-month-old baby, to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).

“We are awaiting further directions from the ODPP regarding this case,” he stated.

Baby Mercy Chepng’eno had passed away while receiving treatment at Nakuru County Teaching and Referral Hospital (NCTRH) on February 5.

When the family arrived to collect the body on February 6, the father, Daniel Kipchirchir, narrates how he was taken in circles when he asked to see his daughter’s body.

In a previous interview with the media, Medical Superintendent Dr. James Waweru explained that there was suspicion of a mix-up, with the possibility that another family having mistakenly taken the body of a child that does not belong to them.

However, on Wednesday, in a shocking revelation, the parents of Baby Maya recounted how their baby was given an injection and shortly afterward became unresponsive, only to be pronounced dead.

Sharon Saidi, the mother of the 7-month-old, explained how she was peacefully with her child when a doctor came and administered three injections. A few hours later, she went to breastfeed the baby, only to find that the child was unresponsive.

“I hurriedly went to the nurse to check on my child, but the nurse dismissed me, saying ‘later, later, later.’ I went outside to call my husband, and when I returned, I was told my baby was deceased. The nurse didn’t let me see the child—I only saw the labelled name at the feet, but I never saw the child to confirm whether she was actually dead,” she signs as she is Deaf.

The couple now say their child may have been sold as the hospital refused to give them contact of the family suspected to have taken Mercy’s body.

Kipchirchir states that had the hospital allowed them to view the body of their deceased child, they would have been content.

However, when they were told to settle the bill first, he began to suspect something was amiss.

The couple which now suspects foul play on the hospitals part are distraught as the whereabouts of their 7-month-old baby remain unknown.
