As students who sat for their KCPE in 2022 transition to high school on February 6, 2023, one Richard Njenga will be running his Kinyozi business wishing he had a secondary school he would report to.

Richard sat for his KCPE exam last year and scored 213 marks but efforts to secure high school placements have hit a dead end.

This is after him sending a message to 22263 to check which school he had been admitted to but to his surprise, the message response was ‘Index unknown’.

"After the Ministry of Education officially released results for the 2022 KCPE secondary school placement results. I rushed to check where I was placed. To my surprise, the response I got was that my index was unknown.” said Njega

For him, this came as a shock and left him questioning whether he had been thrown out of the admission window because of his age.

“I consider myself Kenyan and I don’t think my age limit should hinder me from getting an education especially now that I have devoted time and resources to seat for my KCPE so that I can further my education,” Njenga says.

He cites this hindrance as one that will limit him from achieving his long-paused dream of becoming a lawyer.

Mr. Njenga further states he has visited a high school in Kiamaina Ward, which turned him down and asked him to get necessary admission papers from the sub-county’s ministry of education office citing his age as a challenge.

For now, his hope of joining high school has been crushed and the only way out for him to further his education is for him to put in hours of work in his Kinyozi to raise money for himself so that he could acquire his high school education online.

He hopes to further his education and join university to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Law and fight for the rights of the needy and less fortunate people as they are the one whose rights are violated.

City Lawyer Kipkoech Ng’etich cites Njenga’s situation as a violation of one’s constitutional rights under article 43 1(f) of the Kenyan constitution.
