While many may be distancing themselves from street families, Naomi Wanjiru King’ori has formed a bond with these children and now plays a motherly role to them.

She has been making rounds in the streets of Nakuru handing over packed food to street children. This she does twice a week and at times gets to bring along some clothes she gets from donations.

Her generous act has made her be known as Mama Street kids. These children run to her and embrace her as they know they have a mother and someone who cares for them in her.

As she celebrated her 26 th birthday today, she shared the precious day with the street family members at Lions Garden, in Nakuru city.

“It was saddening that I could not walk more than 100m apart before I met a child or an adult from the street family asking for food. I took it upon myself to step in and help where I could," says Wanjiru.

Naomi has been doing this for a year and a half now and her wish is to get more support so that she can be able to increase the number of times and days she brings them food.

She has been preparing the food from home and packing it into containers before bringing it to town.

“I do this with much love, what I would prepare for my child is what I prepare for them, be it rice and beef or rice and green grams or even fruits and cakes. My wish is to give them the feel of a home-made meal as this is what they mostly miss out on,” she said

“I started giving them food from the little cash I had and I was able to feed around 30 of them but I could not manage to feed all because I had limited resources at the time. I saw it wise to bring them food instead of giving them money,”Wanjiru adds.

The mother of one says it is sad that people dismiss these children when they ask for help terming this as a cry for help that gets ignored.
