During the colonial era it was known as the estate for the Asians as they were the majority who settled in this area that came to be 58 estate or Section 58 as is commonly known among locals.

The estate borders Naka, YMCA on the lower 58 area as well as Kabachia on your way to Nakuru city.

With well tarmacked roads, own compound gated homes and stand-alone houses, residents here prefer a private life.

Section 58 has a fast-growing trading centre that is always a beehive of activities especially in the evening with the Wines and Spirits shops attracting a significant number of customers.

Notable places of worship in the area include St. Monica Catholic Church, Section 58 Parish and Lakeview AGC Church.

Some of the oldest buildings such as Crater View Building and Hygienic Butchery are now being overtaken by the coming up of Hygienic Hotel as well as the Hygienic Supermarket.

Pastor Rachael Ng’etich from Lakeview AGC Church that was established in the estate in 1985 reveals to Mtaa Wangu that the estate has continued to undergo transformation.

While pointing out that this was a quiet and peaceful estate with no bars and social joints, Pastor Ng’etich says the continued growth is a blessing and a curse in equal measure.

“We are happy that the estate has developed and we now even have our own supermarket here unlike before when we had to go all the way to Naivas across the road. But with the mushrooming wines and spirits joints at the section 58 centre, our young people are now getting carried into alcoholism,” she laments.

On matters security, residents say the estate is mostly safe, with a few cases of phone snatching reported once in a while on the feeder roads especially at night.

Mtaa Wangu has learnt that the housing structure is dominated by stand alone houses, own compounds and a few flats now coming up.

Here, you have to part with between Sh 50,000 and Sh 70,000 as rent money for the stand alone houses as well as the own compounds.

Pastor Rachael notes that a plot here goes for as high as Sh 50 million.

Bernard Waweru is a motorbike bodaboda operator at Section 58 centre for the last 10 years and he admits that indeed the coming up of the centre has seen transformation of the estate.

He recalls how the initial business stalls were made of polythene papers for many years before the current modern stalls were established.

“We have seen this centre grow tremendously which has had a positive impact on the residents of 58,” says Waweru.
