If you want to experience a quick adrenaline rush while appreciating what nature has to offer then try and visit Kainaini in Njoro, Gachuhi ward.

Locals named this place Kainaini translating to “one that shakes or dances” because of the wobbly nature of the ground as you walk on it. The land stretching to approximately 3 acres has been an attraction site that only those who have the stomach to walk on shaky ground enjoy.

While speaking to a Local, Mr. Duncan Kagwe shared that the place was a dam during the pre-colonial period, but as years passed siltation and sedimentation took place, and land formed covering up the water.

Since then, the trapped underground water has had the land on motion once you initiate contact.

According to Hydrology expert, Dr. Phillip Mwendwa, a lecturer at Kabarak University, Kainaini is what they consider bogs.

He further states that what makes the people not sink is the fact that black cotton soil and specialized types of grasses have grown in this region making the land stable enough to support heavy weight.

He adds that the wobbly effect is brought about by the elastic land being suspended on a pool of underground water. He considers the place safe to visit as long as one does not put too much weight on one area for long.

Kagwe says that the place is safe to visit adding that in the last 30 years, he has been a resident in the Gachuhi ward and no accident has been reported. Cows also graze here.

However, Kagwe is quick to advise people from visiting the place during the heavy rain seasons. The only time people don’t get to be playful on this ground is when the land swells up from raising water levels underneath.
