During the Nakuru Agricultural Show, students are expected to gain valuable knowledge about agriculture, modern innovations and technologies.

But this is not the only thing they look forward to. The trade fair disco has become one of the main attractions for young people visiting the agricultural show.

In the disco, it is not unusual to see a cloud of dust raised by the many dancers on the dance floor.

As a result, most students who attend the fair wear bandanas to cover their noses from the dust.

When Mtaa Wangu visited the disco, we found a dance competition in progress.

Eric*, one of the students, reveals that he went to the disco to have the opportunity to interact with students from other schools without the watchful eyes of their teachers.

"The arena gives me a chance to show off my dancing skills, which can change the way my peers perceive me at school. If I am recognised as the best dancer, I'll attract the attention of the prettiest girls," Eric said cheekily.

Jane* supported Eric's view, emphasising that the disco arena provides a different environment that many students want to experience before returning to school.

However, they all agree that they are keen to make sure they get back to school on time.

Moses Ongware, the manager of the Show and Funfair Disco, acknowledged that the arena provides entertainment for students and show enthusiasts, but stressed the need to put measures in place to ensure the safety of students while they enjoy themselves.

"We strictly forbid adults from dancing with the students, and we have bouncers stationed around the arena to prevent any such incidents. We also have a zero tolerance policy on alcohol and drugs as the majority of the participants are students," he explained.

According to Mr Ongware the management ensures that all students leave the arena by 5pm to give them enough time to return to school.

The fair disco attracts up to 4,000 people a day and charges Sh100 for admission.
