She pegs her tee on the course ready to tee off. On her hand, she holds a wood club. Judging by her swing, it is clear that Catherine Oosterwijk is a pro golfer.

Ms Catherine joined golf at a time when it was male-dominated. But even then, she did not shy away from the sport.

The current Lady Captain of Njoro golf club has played the sport for more than three decades and won countless awards in tournaments.

She has been a recurrent winner in the lady’s open tournament held in the country annually.

We meet Ms Catherine at Njoro Golf club. As expected, she is groomed in her golf attire; a navy-blue sun hat, a white polo shirt, some checked khaki shorts, and white golf shoes.

“I am a member of the Nakuru Golf club and currently the Lady Captain of the Njoro golf club. I started playing golf in 1990 and developed an interest in the sport after practicing a few swings with some friends,” she says.

Ms Catherine notes that her passion for golf grew steadily and within no time, she was participating in tournaments and winning in some.

“I always play to win, but I never forget to have fun,” she adds.

When asked what she loves about golf, the mother of four notes that she enjoys making friends on the course.

According to Ms Catherine, her greatest joy would be to see more women across the country embracing golf.

"I would like to see more women join the sport and get better at it,” she says.

Her advice to women is to create time to learn golf and do away with the notion that the sport is only meant for men.
