As he assumes office at the helm of the region’s teaching and referral hospital, Dr. James Waweru comes in with 16 years’ experience in practice.

The medic has served twice as a medical superintendent in Bahati and Olenguruone sub-county hospitals.

A day for him as an Obstetrics/Gynaecology doctor as the hospital is helping ladies getting into labour through surgery or even normal delivery.

“My joy is solving complicated cases for patients at a low cost. Delicate cases always give someone a scare but once the patient is treated, as a doctor you are just happy. As you see a patient checking out of the hospital well, it gives you fulfilment,” he says.

“I recall one time when an obstetric patient came in bleeding in a critical condition. I would term that an adrenaline case as we spent hours helping her and when we went out of surgery, I was just thankful.”

Speaking about the facility (Nakuru PGH), Dr Waweru noted that the facility has been on a transformative journey since devolution.

“There was a time people had concerns with the hospital services and availability of medicine at the facility. However, that is something that has been worked on. Something to note is the efforts we are putting to advance our surgery services at the hospital,” he says.

He adds that as he comes in, the plan is to increase surgery sessions from the current two, to three in a day to reduce the backlog at the theatres.

This would mean the facility would increase the number of patients served in a day from 60 to 100.

“We will ensure all diagnosed patients are attended to within a month, either by lobbying for more staff or organizing for more medical camps to have more patients treated at a go,” he adds.

When he is not treating patients, Dr. Waweru engages in board games, particularly chess, or goes to the farm to tend to his crops and chicken.
