Growing up, Kenneth Kimutai Koskei aspired to become a police officer.

But after going through numerous frustrations during recruitment, he threw in the towel.

"They kept telling me that my feet were not in good shape only to realise later that they wanted money in an excess of Sh 250, 000 which I did not have," says Mr Koskei.

Luckily, he managed to get an employment opportunity with a security company within Nakuru which became his saving grace.

With passion he has worked in different security firms for 12 good years and the bitterness he had with the police service has slowly faded away.

The 36-year-old is passionate about his current job with the Total Security company which he says he loves despite it being demanding.

It is a job done in shifts, so Koskei must be extremely punctual with time so that he does not inconvenience his colleague from the night shift.

His morning alarm rings at 4.30 am and after making a morning prayer, he embarks on preparations for the job.

One thing he has to be keen on is his black boots which he spends a good time brushing.

He then prepares breakfast which he partakes before leaving the house at 5 am.

He spends at least 30 minutes on the way and by 5.30am he gets to his station at Tower one.

The first thing Koskei does is to take rounds around the facility to ensure that everything is in order.

"I must check the doors, windows and the walls to see if there is any damage, " he explains.

He then proceeds to the desk to look at the Occurrence Book. This contains the records of the nights happening.

"In case I find any record of an unusual happening, I must inform my bosses immediately and follow their directions, " said Mr Koskei.

However, when the records are normal he takes over the station allowing his colleague to leave.

The security guard will then send a signal to both his supervisor and company security department to inform them that he has begun his shift.

Mr Koskei's good morning is defined by the mood of the members of staff who arrive in the morning.

"When majority come in high spirits they also lift me up which always give me an indication of a good day, " he adds.
