Nakuru County residents on May 8 2023 woke up to the news of a reshuffle targeting senior health officers.

Among those affected in the reshuffle was Dr. Aisha Wangechi Maina, who was moved from Nakuru County Teaching and Referral Hospital Medical Superintendent position to Bahati sub county Hospital as a Dental Specialist.

She was replaced by Dr. James Waweru Munene.

But who is Dr. Aisha Maina?

MtaaWangu takes a deeper look at the immediate former Medical Superintendent and her ups and downs during her tenure.

Dr. Aisha who has a specialization in dental services officially took over the leadership of Nakuru County Level 5 Hospital in January 2021.

During her reign, Dr Aisha ensured high discipline standards among staff at the facility, good relationship between the various departments and always protected the dignity of patients.

She also encountered a number of challenges among them the many cases of retention of patients who could not pay bills.

The matter escalated paving way for a court case by a section of human rights defenders who argued that it was wrong for any facility to hold patients due to unsettled medical bills.

“It is wrong for a facility to enslave patients simply because they are unable to pay bills,” said Human Rights defender Walter Mwania at the time.

It is a matter that saw Governor Susan Kihika step in immediately after she assumed office and declared a waiver for a number of patients who were unable to pay medical bills.

Meanwhile, Mtaa Wangu has learnt that the soft spoken Dr. Aisha was at times media shy, something that did not go well with Nakuru journalists.

All eyes are now on Dr. James Waweru who comes in with 16 years’ experience having served twice as a medical superintendent in Bahati and Olenguruone sub-county hospitals.

Already, he has outlined a plan to increase surgery sessions from the current two, to three in a day with an aim of reducing the backlog at the theatres.
