Menengai oiler player Brian Ndirangu has been signed to a Canadian rugby club as he looks forward to furthering his career in the sport.

In an exclusive interview with Mtaa Wangu, Ndirangu says the move to Westshore Rugby Club is a big career achievement for him, adding that he is looking forward to grace bigger platforms as far as rugby is concerned.

"I was approached by the club when they were looking for a lock in the back row. I am happy to have got the opportunity at the club. There are more achievements and opportunities to come, all I need is time and good sportsmanship to achieve them," says Ndirangu.

Looking back, he says it has taken discipline, resilience, determination and allowing himself to learn to get to where he is now.

He started his rugby journey at Menengai High School, then joined Nakuru Rugby Academy under Nakuru Rugby Football Club, and later moved to Menengai Oilers in 2016 when an opportunity presented itself.

His debut at the club saw him captain for two seasons, something he says has built him up as a player and leader.

"As small as I was, the coach believed in me and with great support from my teammates, we became a strong and great team together. I believed in being an inquisitive leader who allowed himself to learn from others to become a better leader," he said.

Ndirangu joined the Oilers at the age of 18 and left the club at 26. During his sprint as a leader and player, he learnt to step up when his teammates needed him, embraced the virtue of perseverance, inspired those around him to do better and maintained positive relationships at the club.

He will always be grateful to the club for seeing him through university, where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in finance and banking.

Oilers head coach Gibson Weru emphasised on the type of player Ndirangu was, noting that he was a key player at the club.

As a coach, Gibson shares that he is sad to see him leave, but at the same time happy as he moves on to a bigger platform.

"It is a proud moment for me as a coach to see him move on to pursue his dreams. I would say he is a very talented player who understands the game and has contributed immensely to the success of the club. It is impressive to see the development he has undergone in the seven years he has been at the club," said Gibson Weru.

At the club, Ndirangu made his debut for the Simba national team in 2022 and has impressed in the many matches he has played.

According to Gibson, Ndirangu gave his all for the team and in his last game (Nakuru derby) he helped them win the Kenya Cup on day 4.

Ndirangu will be the first player to play for a Canadian team as most of the Oilers players who play overseas have gone on to play for American teams.
