Elizabeth Muteshi, 19, is among the Nakuru City Queens players who are fighting against all odds to ensure that the team performs well in the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Women's Premier League.

The team, which was registered with the FKF in 2016, has been progressing from one level to another and is now playing in the league.

They are currently in the top five in the FKF Women's League.

But despite this exemplary performance, the Queens are struggling.

Ms Muteshi, who plays in positions eight and 10, is currently the team's top scorer.

She says the lack of sponsorship has had a negative impact on the girls' performance in the various matches as they are sometimes forced to play on empty stomachs.

In addition, transport to and from matches remains a challenge, with the team having to rely on well-wishers.

"We have a challenge in terms of our welfare as players. It has had a negative impact on us. You cannot sleep on an empty stomach and expect to perform well in a game," says Ms Muteshi.

Mary Njeri, 24, who plays in both defensive and attacking positions, echoes Ms Muteshi's sentiments.

She says challenges such as lack of transport and uniforms can be solved if the team gets a full-time sponsor.

In the meantime, the players continue to put on a brave face and focus on performing at their best in every game.

"When we are on the pitch, we forget about our challenges and focus on the goal of doing well in the FKF Women Premier League," says Njeri.

Team manager and founder Bernard Esitoko says the lack of sponsorship is derailing the efforts of Nakuru City Queens FC players, most of whom come from humble backgrounds.

While noting the team's exemplary performance in the league, Esitoko called on the Nakuru County government to step in and support the team that has made Nakuru City proud.
