While traditionally seen as a man's game, both younger and older women seem to be joining the world of darts.

During the recently concluded Nakuru Darts Open Cup, the number of participating women increased to 33, marking a significant rise from previous events.

In an exclusive interview with Mtaa Wangu, female participants shared their passion for the sport despite the existing gender stereotypes.

Among them was Milicent Wanjohi, who displayed unwavering concentration during the singles finals.

As she skilfully with precision aimed for the target, a moment of anticipation followed before the dart found its mark on the board.

The crowd erupted in joy as she successfully scored the needed points, sharing the exhilaration with her fans.

Ms. Wanjohi expressed that her victory serves as proof that women are fully capable of excelling in the sport.

"The competition was very stiff, but I am elated to have emerged the winner," said Ms Wanjohi.

Having participated in national tournaments and taking a break from the game in 2012, she now aspires to showcase her skills on the international stage.

Another player, Mary Njenga, from Naivasha, began her journey in 1998, after winning her first tournament through the guidance of a seasoned player.

Since then, Ms. Njenga gained interest in the sport, receiving training from seasoned players to perfect the skill.

This has led to her appearing in major companies' advertisements on the big screen.

"I am proud to see that the negative perceptions against women are changing. More people now accept women's involvement in the sport," said Ms Njenga.

Her interest has influenced her family, to take up darts.

Ms Njenga reveals that she trains every day to perfect her skill, especially in the evening since her job as an enforcement commandant is very demanding leading to her having a dart board in her house.

She's also dedicated to training young women interested in the sport, aiming to provide more opportunities for them locally and nationally.

Edah Warui from Subukia on the other hand encourages interested women to defy stereotypes and join the sport.

Warui says since she started playing in 2000, she has never consumed alcohol even though many assume that all women playing the sport drink alcohol and lack good morals.

She emphasizes the importance of staying true to one's values adding that events attract people from all walks of life.

Despite her children's interests lying in other sports, Warui says she remains committed to promoting darts and empowering women in the sport.
