Nakuru’s Menengai Crater that has in the past been known as a picnic and recreational site is turning to be a dump site for dead bodies.

The vast site with a huge section occupied by Geothermal Development Company for the generation of power is now getting a tinted image due to the worrying trend.

Today morning, residents of neighboring Gatigithu village woke up to shocking news of a middle aged man’s body found 100 metres down one of the cliffs.

The body was noticed by locals who were grazing their animals.

Officers from DCI Nakuru North had a difficult time retrieving the body from the floor of the Crater due to the steepness of the site.

It had to take the aid of 5 locals from the area for the mission to be accomplished.

Nakuru North DCIO Wesley Langat said the body that had injuries on the ribs, face, arms and broken limbs was not identified since no documents were found.

The officer added that it is not clear whether it is accidental death or suicide - an issue that he says will be determined through a postmortem.

The body was taken to Nakuru County Mortuary.

This even as locals in the area decry the continued trend where bodies are found dumped on the floor of the vast Menengai Crater.

Paul Karanja- a resident of Gatigithu village that borders crater since 1976 revealed that the trend is worrying.

Karanja revealed that whenever they spot eagles in the area there is a clear communication that there is a body dumped in the area.

He says time is now for the county government to fence off the area to avert the menace of dead bodies being dumped in the area as well as the site being used by those who want to accomplish their suicide missions.

“The trend is worrying and something has to be done” he said.
