A family of Nakuru-based journalist is still coming to terms with the Sunday incident where robbers made it into their house in Bahati Sub county, making away with items of unknown value.

Mercy Mwangi, the wife of Eliud Mwangi (a camera person for one of the TV stations) told reporters that she and her children left for the early morning Sunday service and when they returned, they found their house broken into and electric appliances stolen.

Ms. Mwangi said the burglar also made off with her husband`s office laptop.

“I still can’t believe that this happened to me” she says.

Residents say the burglars who are armed with master keys break into houses at night and during the day.

The discontent among residents at the lack of vigilance among security operators in the area has prompted calls for an immediate overhaul of security officers who have since been discredited as showing laxity in their core mandate to protect lives and property.

George Watunu, an elder in the locality, called on the police to step up surveillance in the area which he said had become increasingly insecure as people lose properties to theft.

“Lately, it seems, we are on our own. You leave your house in the morning for work but at the back of your mind you know that the safety of your house is not guaranteed,” lamented Watunu.

Lands and Public Works Chief Administrative Secretary Kimani Ngunjiri visited the affected family, calling on the police to intensify patrols in the area and smash the notorious ring of burglars that have been striking fear among residents.

Ngunjiri lamented the rise in incidents of burglaries and the presence of what he described as a well-oiled car theft syndicate saying these have been unsettling among residents in recent weeks.

“We need to use the community policing clusters to help wipe out the criminal elements that are causing havoc in community,” said Ngunjiri.
