After more than a decade of inactivity, construction of the Olenguruone Stadium in Kuresoi South, Nakuru County, is finally set to resume.

The long-delayed project was given a new lease of life when a groundbreaking ceremony was held, presided over by Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya and Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika.

The Sh290 million project was launched in 2012 but stalled soon after commencement, despite the initial contractor having received Sh73 million. The incomplete facility has remained an eyesore in a region known for producing world-class athletes ever since.

Speaking at the event, Governor Kihika said that the project's revival marks a new beginning for local sports development.

"This project was started during the Kibaki era, and to date it has never been finished. It is unfortunate because this region is the cradle of champions. We visited President William Ruto, who offered his support, and the Kenya Defence Forces have now taken over the project," she said.

The governor urged local residents, particularly young people, to take advantage of the job opportunities that will arise from the construction of the stadium.

“The contractor has assured us that they will source labour from the locals to ensure you also benefit from the ongoing works,” she added.

The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) will also oversee the completion of the Afraha Stadium in Nakuru City, with the ground-breaking ceremony scheduled for October 15, 2025.

According to her, the modernised Olenguruone Stadium will accommodate a variety of sporting disciplines, including athletics, football and indoor games. She revealed that, once completed, the facility will be named in honour of Olympic and world champion Faith Kipyegon, who is from the area.

The Defence Cabinet Secretary, Soipan Tuya, said that the KDF would be responsible for supervision and quality control, ensuring that the project meets high standards and is completed on schedule.

“The KDF will not be taking up casual jobs. All of these opportunities will be given to local young people and residents of Kuresoi,” she said.

The new design will include a modern pavilion with seating for 3,000 people, while the existing structure will be upgraded to accommodate at least 1,000 more.

Governor Kihika expressed optimism that, with the involvement of the KDF, the long-awaited sports facilities in Nakuru will finally be completed, providing opportunities for athletes and stimulating the local economy through sporting events.

“Olenguruone Stadium will finally become the home of champions,” she said.
