Banita Livestock Market stands as Nakuru's premier hub for livestock auctions, having ascended to this esteemed position since its inception in 1997.

Located within Soin Ward in Rongai Sub County, this thriving market was conceived with the dual purpose of promoting livestock farming and supporting the economic prosperity of local farmers.

Originally dedicated solely to livestock, the market now encompasses the trade of crops and clothing as well.

Operating on a twice-a-month schedule, the market alternates its sessions with the Solai auctioning market, located within the same Sub-county.

This was revealed by Kimunai Ole Kimeiwa, the market's chairperson.

Under the guidance of Kimeiwa, the market has a transaction of more than 300 goats and sheep, as well as over 200 cattle, during each market day.

"This busy activity results in a busy economic exchange, with sheep and goats commanding prices ranging from Sh 3,000 to Sh 10,000, and cattle fetching amounts between Sh 12,000 and Sh 100,000, depending on the animal's breed and quality," Kimeiwa reveals.

The market's impact is tangible, contributing to an impressive cumulative income of Sh 10 million in one market day for both traders and farmers in the area.

The market's reach extends even further, attracting buyers from distant areas such as Mogotio, thus perpetuating a cycle of prosperity that radiates outward.

Kimeiwa acknowledges that the market is not without challenges, noting that livestock are prone to diseases like foot-and-mouth disease, and other diseases that affect the business heavily.

"Through vigilant efforts and regular vaccinations, we have been able to mitigate the challenge," he notes.

The area's semi-arid climate poses another obstacle, at times resulting in scarcity of food for the animals. Consequently, to avoid such misfortune, farmers occasionally sell their livestock at reduced prices.

"To accomplish this, traders are mandated to undergo a registration process, this effectively signals their commitment to legal and transparent trade practices," he says.

Kimeiwa ardently advocates for the annual public goat auction, which he believes will be a catalyst for economic enrichment not just for the immediate community but for Nakuru County as a whole.
