The upgrade of the Afraha Stadium to international standards has taken significant steps forward, with the renovation of the stadium's pitch being a major part of the work.

The 20,000-seater stadium is being built in phases with funding from the World Bank and the county government.

The first phase includes the construction of the VIP and main stands, levelling of the pitch, an all-weather running track, media rooms, car parks and restaurants.

Key aspects of the pitch renovation are currently underway, including the installation of strategically dug trenches lined with perforated pipes to allow excess water to drain away from the surface and ensure proper drainage of the pitch during the rainy season.

Other key aspects of the stadium's pitch renovation include the planting of grass to improve the aesthetics and comfort of the pitch and the construction of the running track.

The construction of the stadium will go a long way in developing local talent and attracting international tournaments, especially as Nakuru County is bidding to host some of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) matches.

The facility, which has been in existence for 75 years, will undergo a facelift from April 2021.
