The County Government of Nakuru has projected a total budget of Sh 21 billion in the financial year 2024/25.

This is according to a report of the committee on budget and appropriation on the budget estimates for FY 2024/25.

At least 14 billion (66.6 percent) will go to recurrent expenditure while sh. 7 billion (33.4 percent) will go to the development expenditure.

The Health Services department will get the lion’s share of the budget with sh. 7.8 billion (37.1percent) followed by the County Treasury Department which will get sh. 2.3 billion (11.2percent), Infrastructure gets sh. 1.8 billion (8.7percent) and Education, ICT, e government and Public Communication receiving sh. 1.7 billion (8.0percent)

In the last financial year, 2023/24 the total budget amounted to 18 billion. With most of the money going towards funding recurrent expenditure 67percent with only 33percent going to development expenditure.

The four departments were still the biggest beneficiaries in the budget.

According to the report, the county is being recommended to ensure that expenditure is skewed towards development as opposed to recurrent to avoid negating fiscal responsibility principle and ensure meaningful development is felt across the county.

"The county treasury should ensure that finalized but unsettled pending bills as well as ongoing works are included in the budget for FY 2024/25. In addition, the county is directed to focus on completion of ongoing projects with emphasis placed on projects nearing completion so that citizens benefit from them as opposed to starting new ones," the report reads.
