Chairman Association for the Physically Disabled of Kenya (APDK) in Nakuru Fredrick Owako has called on unregistered persons with disability in Nakuru to make effort and register.

The process, he reveals, starts with a medical assessment at a cost of about Sh 600 which should be done at a government registered either Level 4 or Level 5 hospital.

For instance, in Nakuru, those based in Molo can visit Molo Level 4 Hospital, those in Naivasha can be assessed at Naivasha Level 4, those in Bahati can visit Bahati Level 4 while those in Nakuru city centre can make it to Nakuru Level 5.

“It all starts with a medical assessment at a government health facility,” says Owako.

Once assessed by a team of medical officers, Mr. Owako points out that a recommendation is done on whether it is a severe disability or not.

He is quick to point out that previously the recommendations were taken to Nairobi’s Afya House for approval by the Director of Medical services before the services were devolved.

Currently, one is able to take the recommendation to the County Director of Medical Services before they are then taken to the County Coordinator of National Council for Persons with Disability at the regional coordinator’s office.

“Initially, people used to go to Afya House in Nairobi, but things have changed and the process is done here at the County level because we have the Coordinators in every county,” he states.

A communication is then made to the persons who have been approved to come with National ID and a passport size photograph for registration.

It is here that the card for the National Council for Persons with Disability is generated and the specific individuals called to collect.

The card that shows your photo, name, number, and the kind of disability comes with benefits such as waiver on business permits within the County, tax exemption and applying to have aid in severe cases.

According to the 2019 census, 2.2% (0.9 million people) of Kenyans live with some form of disability.
