The court has found the Kenya Defense Force officer Edwin Muthomi, who was accused of murdering his wife Ann Mugure on April 14, 2026, unfit to stand trial.

The court in its ruling referred the officer to Mathare Mental Hospital for treatment after the psychiatric test revealed he is mentally unsound

According to a medical report conducted on April 23, by Dr Wafula at the Nakuru County Referral and Teaching hospital, has Bipolar Mood Disorder and Post Traumatic Disorder with Psychosis that was poorly treated.

“He is advised seek treatment; hence, he is not fit to plead and stand trial in his current state,” reads part of the report.

Guided by the report, the Judge deferred the plea until a date when the suspect will be confirmed fit to plead to the charges.

“We defer the plea for him to undergo treatment and by consent we will need to have mentions in between to confirm status,” says the Judge

Further the judge directed that the military property in the said house where the accused lived, together with personal items including ID card, educational certificates and transcripts and the bank cards be collected by the investigating officer, Jonathan Chepkonga and be released to the accused and the military respectively.

“The accused person is hereby referred to Mathare mental hospital for treatment and the mention will be on June 4,2026 to confirm the accused status and to confirm the compliance to the release of the above items,” the judge notes.

The report further captured Muthomi’s father’s account of events following his deployment and work at the defense forces.

According to his father, Anthony Kaunga, Muthomi occasionally took alcohol.

Kaungu notes that between 2019 and 2025, Muthomi went for peace enforcement and peace companying in Somalia and Congo respectively. Following the deployment, he started exhibiting change in behaviour.

He became irritable, violent towards family members, lack of sleep, wandering about at night. grandiose-like behaviour “refers to something impressive, grand, or elaborate, often excessively so to the point of being pretentious, exaggerated, or impractical.

“He leased and moved around in a high-end vehicle and associating with profile politicians despite them not knowing him. He engaged in activities with negative effects such as giving out money to strangers and hiring high end vehicles,” Kaunga explains.

Additionally, he notes that his son was admitted and treated in various hospitals including Forces Memorial Nairobi and Regional Army Hospital Lanet for mental illness (PTSD).

“This impaired family relationship and affected his work. He got a warning letter and returned from Congo half mission. Despite all these he has had poor compliance to medication.” Kaunga states.

Muthomi was arrested as the main suspect in the murder of his 29-year-old wife after a domestic violence ensued at their home and he stabbed her on the chest with a kitchen knife.

Following this Mugure was rushed to Nairobi hospital for treatment but died 10 minutes into getting treatment.
