In 2024 while Elvis Mushilla was shooting on of his prankster content near the CK Patel building, one of the county enforcement officers (kanjo) came up to his videographer and confiscated his camera.

It was not until after the content creator parted with a few hundred shillings of his hard-earned money, that his camera was returned to him.

It is such incidences that have prompted nominated Member of County Assembly (MCA), Hassan Duale to table a motion supporting content creators in Nakuru County.

When presenting the motion at the county assembly on September 17, the legislator acknowledged that within Nakuru there are those who have undertaken content creation not just as a recreational activity but as an income generating business.

“This youth form part of the informal economy of Nakuru and are seen within various parts of Nakuru creating content,” he says.

He notes that county enforcement officers frequently intimidated the content creators as they are informal and unregulated. Some officers also demand bribes from them.

“These individuals who are predominantly youth should be treated with dignity and treated with dignity and respect. Therefore, this house urges the County Government of Nakuru to seize collecting any monies formally or informally from these individuals. Secondly, they should seize from any form of intimidation or harassment,” he notes.

Lastly, they should desist from interfering with operations of content creation, except when their businesses do not adhere to law and order.

Mushilla says that this is a step in the right direction and it will go a long way in helping content creators.

“Coming into this year things have been a bit chilled, a while back things were not all that well. I commend the steps taken. However, I would like to urge the County Government to look into ways they can empower us as content creators,” he says.

He concludes by saying that support to the content creators within Nakuru will go a long way in building the creative industry in Nakuru.
