For many years, Nakuru was touted as the cleanest town in East and Central Africa.

Although this title has waned with time, the county has now embarked on efforts to make the city clean and beautiful through tree planting.

Already some of the trees that were planted last year in the city centre have attracted positive feedback from the residents who took to social media commending the county’s move.

Lumbe Roy proudly states, “My city my town” while Peter Mwangi says, “True. Green is life. Keep it up.”

Honorable Betty Maina also seems impressed as she says " Nakuru goes green."

At the same time, Robert Nyakundi asked that the program be extended to other parts of the county saying, "Very encouraging. I kindly request the greening programme to be extended to all road reserves."

According to the city manager, Gitau Thabanja, the county administration has ear marked all the urban centers in the city to undergo the beautification process.

Currently, the exercise is ongoing in Freehold estate, the stretch between Menengai high school to Free Area and inside Nyayo gardens.

Mr. Thabanja says, “we have an ongoing exercise in partnership with different agencies within the city, such as The Judiciary Environment court, Business court and other stakeholders with a gear to achieving a greener city.”

According to him, the cleaning and tree planting exercise within the city begun last week and will go on until all the areas are covered.

The motive of the tree planting is to align with the national government’s goal of attaining ten percent forest cover.

Last year, 10,000 trees were planted at Menengai crater, which was meant to replace some of the trees that were destroyed by the fire.
