October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to advocating for cancer prevention and offering support to those affected by this prevalent disease.

Currently, breast cancer stands as the leading cancer in Nakuru, followed by cervical, oesophageal, prostate, and colorectal cancer, making up the top five prevalent cancers in the county.

This information was shared during an interview with Dr. Siwilis E. Mithe, a Clinical and Radiation Oncologist, and the Head of the Oncology Department at the Nakuru County Referral and Teaching Hospital.

Dr. Mithe emphasized that while Breast Cancer Awareness Month serves as an important time, there is an urgent need for continuous public awareness about the importance of early detection.

She stressed the importance of demystifying myths and misconceptions about cancer, ensuring that it is not viewed as a death sentence.

“Early screening is key, as it can lead to timely detection of the disease before symptoms become apparent, making treatment more effective and reducing the chances of fatality,” she said.

Furthermore, the early identification of cancer significantly reduces the financial burden associated with treatment, especially when compared to late-stage interventions.

Dr. Mithe shared that the Nakuru County Referral and Teaching Hospital has introduced measures to combat breast cancer within the county, including a 50 percent reduction in the cost of mammograms for women over forty years old.

Women under forty are encouraged to undergo clinical breast exams or breast ultrasounds.

In addition, the hospital is working towards establishing a cancer treatment directory to streamline the treatment process for cancer patients in the county.

“This directory will facilitate easier identification of cancer services offered at various healthcare facilities, reducing delays in treatment,” she noted.

Dr. Mithe strongly discouraged the use of alternative therapies, such as herbal treatments, which lead to delayed interventions and adverse effects on patients. She urged patients to seek proper care from healthcare professionals.

It is noteworthy that the Nakuru County Referral and Teaching Hospital is the sole public healthcare facility in Nakuru offering comprehensive cancer care services, including chemotherapy, radiation therapy, hormonal therapy among others.
