Nakuru County Government is inviting members of the public and stakeholders to submit their views in a written memorandum on the Nakuru County Revenue Allocation (Amendment) Bill 2023.

In addition, the Budget and Appropriations Committee will hold a public hearing at the Nakuru County Assembly, Auditorium at Ugatuzi Plaza.

"Written submissions/memoranda may be sent to the Clerk, County Assembly of Nakuru, P.O. Box 907-20100 Nakuru or delivered to the Clerk's office or emailed to clerk@assembly.nakuru.go.ke. Copies of the bill can be obtained from the Assembly website www.assembly.nakuru.go.ke," reads part of the notice.

So why is it important for locals to participate in such an exercise?

The County Revenue Allocation determines how much money goes to each district within the county.

So the money the county gets from the national government and the revenue it generates is what has to be shared among the wards.

According to Masese Kemunche, the CEO of the Centre of Enhancing Democracy and Good Governance (CEDGG), it is very important for the public to come out and express their opinion on how they think the county's revenue should be spent in their wards.

"One of the things that the people of Nakuru should be aware of is that we need to ensure that we do not come up with a formula for the allocation of this revenue that will result in the resources being spread in such a way that the available resources will not have an impact on the wards," said Mr Kemunche.

"There are some wards that have better infrastructure and facilities than others, so if you decide to say that 60 per cent will be shared equally among all the wards, how are we going to ensure that the wards that are left behind begin to catch up with the others?" he asked.

The public hearing on the Nakuru County Revenue Allocation will be held on the 29th of this month.
