A woman from Free Area is recovering from injuries sustained when she was attacked by monkeys. Caroline Musungu was standing by the roadside chatting with two of her friends when the incident happened.

"I was talking to my friends and as I was crossing the road some monkeys were fighting. They attacked me from behind," Ms Musungu said in an interview with online content creator Asu Lab.

According to Ms Musungu, she sustained injuries on her buttocks and hand, where she said she was bitten by the group of monkeys.

After the ordeal, she was rushed to the Free Area dispensary where she received first aid and a tetanus shot before being taken to the area chief's office.

Ms Musungu says the area chief gave her transport to go to Langalanga Hospital for further treatment. At Langalanga hospital she was referred to Nakuru Referral and Teaching Hospital because they did not have the drugs she needed.

"I am yet to be treated at PGH because I do not have the Sh1,300 needed for my retreatment. KWS officials were here and asked me to fund my treatment after which they would take care of it from there," she said.

This is not the first time Ms Musungu has been attacked by monkeys, in August 2023 she broke her arm in a similar attack.

While she was recovering from those injuries, she was attacked again.

During her first attack, well-wishers donated money for her treatment.

The infamous monkey and baboon problem in Lake Nakuru National Park has been reported in several areas including Honeymoon Hill, Mwariki, Manyani, Flamingo, Lake View Estate, Kwa Murogi in Free Area and Barut areas.

Monkeys and baboons are wreaking havoc and attacking locals. The animals mostly steal food from people living near the park.

Free Area residents are pleading with Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officials to find a way to contain the animals in the park and prevent further attacks.
