The joy that comes with a school making it to either Regional or National level in the Drama and Music Festival is indescribable.

In Nakuru, one school has been lucky to qualify for the regional music and drama festivals to be held in Kitale, Western Region.

However, Mtaa Wangu has learnt that the joy of this particular school seems to be short-lived as one of the main characters in the dance might not take part in the competition.

According to one of the teachers at the school who spoke on anonymity, the parents of the pupil are against the school’s move to have their daughter participate in the dance.

The reason being, the father is a lead pastor in one of the most conservative churches in Kenya and has termed folkdance as contrary to the teachings of the bible.

Coincidentally, the dance being done by the girl narrates the struggles of a teenager whose parents do not support her dreams.

The school revealed to Mtaa Wangu the dilemma they are in now, as they might be forced to replace the main character and train a new person just in time for the show.

Attempts to convince the father to allow her daughter partake in the music festivals has hit a snag.

“We have tried to talk to the parents to allow the pupil be part of the competition in Kitale, but he insists that her daughter be relieved from the drama club,” one of the teacher’s said.

It should be noted that the Ministry of Education describes extra-curricular activities as important in the all-round development of a student.
