Living in close proximity to conservancies often leads to significant human-wildlife conflicts, resulting in negative outcomes such as property damage, loss of livelihoods, and even loss of life for many individuals.

However, the residents of the DTI area in Gilgil Sub county have managed to coexist with the wild animals from Malura Conservancy.

The village derives its name from the presence of the Dairy Training Institute in the vicinity.

Eric Kitonga, a long-time resident of the area, has witnessed a harmonious relationship between the community and the wildlife.

Over the past 25 years, there has been only one instance of conflict when a poacher was attacked by a buffalo.

According to Kitonga, this symbiotic relationship has been nurtured through regular training sessions conducted by officials from the Kenya Wildlife Service.

"The officials have emphasized that resorting to defensive or retaliatory killings could ultimately drive these species to extinction, leading to more frequent encounters that bring suffering to both humans and wildlife," he says.

Additionally, Kitonga emphasizes the significance of community policing in curbing poaching, noting that most poachers originate from neighbouring villages.

"Thanks to the prompt response of the Kenya Wildlife Service officials and the presence of an Anti-Stock Theft unit in the area, poaching activities have been successfully prevented," he adds.

Mary Wambui shares similar sentiments as she frequently encounters snakes in her homestead.

When she first moved to the area, her son immediately killed a snake he encountered.

However, her neighbours advised her that these animals visit regularly, particularly during dry seasons. She was educated about preventive measures, such as ensuring water points are available around the homestead and keeping the doors locked, as most animals visit seeking water.

David Torre, a herder, recounts his initial fear upon encountering buffalo herds in the thickets when he began herding in the area last year.

He was cautioned against provoking the animals, as it could make them aggressive and potentially attack him.

With time, he has become adept at managing such situations while remaining cautious.
