What was once a humble swamp in the 1960s, has transformed into a flourishing fishing ground known as Lake Solai.

The Lake that sits in the quiet Rongai sub county remains hidden from many, with very few people having knowledge of its ability to breed fish.

The County Government of Nakuru, having recognized the potential of the lake as a fishing resource, has been diligently stocking it with fingerlings since 2019.

This proactive approach led to an increase in the fish population, particularly species like Tilapia and Catfish.

Hence, Lake Solai became a prime destination for fishing enthusiasts and a source of livelihood for the local community.

However, the story of this Lake is not without its limitations.

In an interview with Mtaa Wangu, Mr. Allan Changwony, an official from the Lake Solai Wetlands Conservation Association, says that the lake's abundance of fish follows a distinct pattern that aligns with the changing seasons.

“During the rainy months, typically between March and May, the lake becomes a bustling haven for fish. However, the dry months witness a significant decline,” says Mr. Changwony.

This cyclic nature of fish abundance has led to Lake Solai being termed a "seasonal" fishing area.

Ms. Jennifer Jepchumba, a resident of Solai who practices fishing, attests that the new economic activity has positively impacted her life.

“Through this job, I have not only found purpose and engagement but also a means of livelihood that sustains me and my family,” she says.

Unfortunately, according to Mr. Raymond Mwangata, the Director of the fisheries department in Nakuru County, despite the County Government's efforts in fish restocking, there have been persistent challenges in fish regeneration.

“Currently, there has been a slow pace of fish multiplication in Lake Solai which has in-turn brought about a slower-than-expected growth of the fish population,” says Mr. Mwangata.

To manage this delicate state, regulations have been implemented to limit the number of fishing boats allowed on the lake, ensuring that sustainable fishing practices are maintained.
