Naka Estate is one of the revered areas in Nakuru City. From modern apartments to tongue wagging residential homes, Naka is an architectural haven.

Mtaa Wangu visited the estate that borders Nakuru Police Dog Section and Lake Nakuru National Park on the other end.

According to retired Colonel Raymond Cheruiyot, one of the leaders in Naka Residents Association, the estate is divided into Naka A, Naka B, Naka C and Naka Parkview with each having a chairman.

Initially, the estate was a bare parcel of land. In 1985, Nakuru Development Limited bought the land and divided it into quarter plots that gave birth to the current developed estate.

Despite being a posh estate, challenges of insecurity and land grabbing have tainted the image of Naka.

The insecurity challenge saw the area residents from all the four mini-estates that form the estate come together to form welfare groups towards enhancing security in the area.

This would later lead to the establishment of gated communities that can be seen when you walk around the estate.

The issue of land grabbing is also an issue here, with land that was meant for public amenities such as schools and hospitals being grabbed.

Naka Primary, the only public primary school in the area hit the headlines some years back after it emerged that there were plans to grab part of it.

Besides land grabbing, the population in the area has grown tremendously leading to the mushrooming of apartments that have put a strain on resources such as water and sewerage services.

This, the locals feel, should be addressed to help maintain the dignity of the estate where a quarter plot goes for Kshs.14 million.
