At first glance, you wouldn't think of him as a DJ because of his introverted personality and calm demeanour. However, Wilson Gumba alias DJ Reignherd is a talented and dope Deejay.

He has a way with his mixtapes and an incredible way of studying the crowd to know when to elevate you from one point to the next.

Growing up, Gumba wanted to become a rapper and largely looked up to sensational Kenyan musician Wyre in terms of his career growth.

However, his dream changed while he was in high school at Loreto high school when a parent came in with a fully equipped DJ system that mesmerized him.

“When I was in form two, my classmate’s dad played really well on our sports day, and that sparked my interest in deejaying. I wanted to own such equipment and play as good music as he did, “he recalls.

That was when he set out to learn the way around virtual DJ, a deejaying software that led Gumba to owning his own DJ deck system.

However, his parents were against him practicing deejaying as a career and he was sent off to the National Youth Service (NYS) in 2013, and later on to Kiirua college in Meru to take Electrical and Electronics Engineering in 2014.

“After college in 2017, I practiced the electrical job for a year while still doing night shows at Shemeji without my parents knowing. In 2018 a year later I called it quits to follow my dream,” he said.

This did not sit well with his mother and she made it clear that if it did not work, he should move out from home.

Luckily, he had secured employment at Shemeji.

“When my parents saw that the job was paying me well and that I loved what I was doing they gave me their blessings,” he says.

Gumba notes he played at Shemeji for two years before moving to Sunchic and later at Chili’s in 2021 where he now plays as the resident DJ.

“It has been a beautiful journey of seeing a happy crowd every time I play, something I always envisioned for myself,” he said
