The security docket is one of the most important yet least appreciated in society.

Police commanders who lead security operations carry the greatest responsibility of ensuring the safety of the citizens as well as their property.

Mr Martin Wekesa is one of the commanders in Charge of Nakuru East Sub county.

Having been in the office for less than a year, Mr Wekesa has been focusing his energies in fighting criminal gangs who have terrorised residents for years.

As a senior police officer in charge of Nakuru city's security, Mr Wekesa says his work is overwhelming.

With high rates of crime, the police boss in an exclusive interview with Mtaa Wangu revealed that he barely has time to rest.

"I am always on guard since you never know what the next signal will be about. Most of the incidences require my urgent attention so I have to be on standby," said Mr Wekesa.

In his tight schedule the police commander said he has no regular wake up schedule. This is because he does not have a regular sleeping time.

"At times I may work the entire night until morning depending on the operation so I may be forced to continue working until the operation is complete," he said.

The officer said he at times takes a nap to cool his head once he gets an opportunity.

However, when there are no major operations, Mr Wekesa says he wakes up at 4 am to prepare himself for the day.

He then prepares himself for at most an hour before leaving the house.

"I must be in my office at the Nakuru Central Police Station by 6 am," states Mr Wekesa.

Once he gets to the office he responds to the many requests sent to his tray and evaluates the signals that were sent over the night.

He then convenes his daily meetings with the sub county police station commanders, inspectors as well as sub county ward officers.

"The meeting is meant to assess the security situation of the region as well as address any complaints made to his office and other emerging issues," sid Mr Wekesa.

The meeting is also used to plan the activities of the day

After the meeting, Mr Wekesa sees a number of people who had booked appointments to his office.

By 9 am Mr Wekesa will leave his office to make rounds in the region and asses security operations in various points

"Our job is not about being the office but in the field dealing with security operation. I might pop in once in a while but rarely will you find me in the office," said Mr Wekesa
