Stanley Mutua, popularly known as Stan, has emerged as a driving force in revitalizing the Zumba scene in Nakuru City.

Zumba, a unique combination of dance and exercise, has found new life under his guidance.

In an exclusive interview with Mtaa Wangu, Stan shares his inspiring journey, which began in 2019.

Originally a fitness instructor based in Nairobi, Mutua's passion for dance led him to explore the world of Zumba.

Drawing from his lifelong love for dancing and his existing skills as a dancer, he quickly grasped the essence of Zumba and seamlessly integrated it with fitness.

However, his career faced an unforeseen setback when the COVID-19 pandemic struck the following year, leading to a loss of all his clients due to lockdown restrictions.

Adapting to the circumstances, Stan returned to his hometown in Nakuru and embarked on a soul-searching journey to determine his next steps.

It was during this process that he realized the scarcity of Zumba instructors in Nakuru. Inspired by this revelation, he decided to establish himself as a professional Zumba instructor.

“I pursued training to become a certified professional Zumba instructor, successfully completing the required processes,” he recalls.

A fortuitous encounter with a fellow Zumba instructor at the Pivot Hotel paved the way for Stan's entry into the industry.

Taking advantage of an opportunity to assist the instructor, Mutua mentions he began teaching part-time classes.

As his reputation grew, he gradually established a full-time class and earned referrals from satisfied customers, all transpiring during a period when COVID-19 restrictions were eased in 2020.

Setting himself apart from conventional Zumba classes, Mutua diligently researches on trending music and incorporates it into his sessions, ensuring an enjoyable experience for participants of all ages.

“By blending various genres and creating my own unique style, I managed to curve a niche in the Zumba world, fostering an inclusive environment that caters to everyone,” says Mutua.

He mentions that one of the challenges he faces is that not all customers appreciate the benefits of Zumba as they often mistake it for ‘simply dancing’.

He acknowledges that not all clients readily accept a new instructor, but he remains undeterred in his commitment to deliver value.

Mutua additionally discloses that Nakuru currently experiences a notable scarcity of Zumba classes in contrast to Nairobi, making it challenging to find an abundance of instructors in Nakuru.

For Stan, one of the most fulfilling aspects of his journey as a Zumba instructor is the freedom of being his own boss while thoroughly enjoying his work.

Stanley Mutua’s efforts have not only revived Zumba in Nakuru but also continues to positively impact lives.
