One person has died while receiving treatment for a gunshot wound sustained during the anti-government protests.

This brings the total number of people who have died as a result of the protests to two.

According to Nakuru Level 5 Deputy Medical Superintendent Samuel Wanjara, the facility had received 10 casualties, nine of them with gunshot wounds, while one had a deep cut wound.

"Between Wednesday and Thursday, we received 10 patients, all from the demonstrations, nine of them adults and one 14-year-old minor. Out of the 10, we operated on three yesterday, but one succumbed to his injuries on Friday morning as he had severe abdominal injuries from the gunshot wound," Dr Wanjara said.

Four of the patients they received went to the theatre yesterday.

"Of those who went to the theatre, bullets were recovered, but in the case of the two patients, the bullets went through and they had serious injuries, chest and abdominal injuries," he said.

At present, Nakuru is back to normal with school children attending classes, shops closing late in the evening and the flow of people on the streets increasing.

There have been no instances of youths taking to the streets and looting shops as seen in the past two days.

There is a sense of calm and normalcy in Nakuru as there has been little to no rioting by youths involved in the three days of anti-government protests.

Tensions had been high for two days since July 19, when Maandamano was marred by violence, looting and extensive damage to property.

One person died after allegedly being shot by police, while many others were injured in the protests.

Huge contingents of armed police were deployed in the city to contain the situation as hundreds of youths took to the streets to protest against the high cost of living.

According to Nakuru County Police Commander Samuel Ndanyi, police were strategically deployed in different areas to deny the protesters access to the Central Business District where they planned to land and wreak havoc in the name of protest.

"For three days now, our officers have been out there trying to restore calm to the city. Our focus was to make sure that the protesters did not get to the CBD, because that is where they wanted to go and cause trouble. Instead of protesting peacefully, these rioters were stealing from shops and robbing people of their belongings," Mr Ndanyi said.

The police boss adds that they could not take any chances on Friday, so police have been patrolling since the morning and there has been no disturbance. He also reveals that they made some arrests during the protests.

"We made several arrests during the protests, 37 of them were arrested on Wednesday and 45 yesterday, bringing the total number of people arrested in connection with the protests to 82," Mr Ndanyi said.

"They were arraigned but did not enter a plea as the investigating officer asked for more days to complete the investigation. The court granted the investigating officers 10 and 14 days respectively to complete their investigations," he said.
