The woes of former employees of the Pyrethrum Processing Company of Kenya (PPCK) seem far from ending.

Thirteen years after they retired from the Nakuru company, there is no clear structure and plans to have them paid their dues.

The former employees are now calling on the government to step in and pay them their dues that have accumulated up to Sh 2.5 billion.

According to them, a court ruling to have some of the PPCK assets sold to get funds to pay the pensioners is yet to be implemented.

Led by Mr Benson Ainda, the pensioners faulted the government for delaying in approval of the pay out, which has negatively affected the former employees.

“Our members have waited for a long time with no pay. A lot of us are now ailing, others have lost their lives. We urge the government to move with speed and ensure we are paid our pension” said Mr Ainda.

The former workers’ financial woes began in 2012 over what was termed as poor management by the sponsors.

Mr Harun Tinga, the secretary of the pensioners, told journalists that the last time the members were paid their pension was 10 years ago.

He added that it is wrong for the senior citizens to be subjected to humiliation yet they worked tirelessly for the company

“It is unfortunate that instead of our members getting paid, they have been subjected to a lot of suffering due to mismanagement of the scheme,” noted Mr Tinga.

Before the collapse, the company used to process pyrethrum that earned the country more than Sh10 billion a year in foreign exchange.

It is still not clear why the pensioners are yet to be paid despite the court ruling that required that the company’s assets be liquidated to provide funds to pay them.
