A few kilometres from Ngata center is the mansion of the late former Treasury official, Tom Fred Mokaya Osinde, which is currently a crime scene.

On Thursday, when Mtaa Wangu arrived at the house, detectives from the Criminal Investigation Department who had come to inspect the house and take photographs were denied access by the family.

The media, who were keen to get information, were also refused entry by the family on the grounds of privacy.

However, after minutes of persuasion, the officers were allowed into the compound, but were unable to enter the main house after being told that it was locked.

His white mansion sits on a 10 acre land in the leafy suburb of Ngata. It is surrounded by acres of lush maize, which neighbours say reflects his love of farming.

Denis, a caretaker who lives opposite Osinde's home, notes that he was a loving and caring gentleman who interacted freely with the community.

"Mzee (Mr Osinde) was a social person and he used to visit our compound because we were both actively involved in the construction of our houses. We often exchanged ideas on construction and property matters in general," Denis said.

According to his family, at the time Osinde went missing on 18 June, he was expected to travel from his residence in Ngata to his rural home in Borabu, Nyanira County. However, he never returned home.

On June 22, his body was found floating in River Kuja in Migori County by good Samaritans who informed the police.

The badly decomposed body was then taken to a mortuary in Migori and registered as an unknown person, pending identification by his family and later a postmortem examination.

On June 29, seven days after his body lay unidentified at the mortuary, his family positively identified his body and took it to another mortuary in Kisii County.

A police source close to the investigation said that his body had wounds caused by a blunt object.
