Two men suspected of being behind the county's fake document syndicate were on Friday charged with 12 counts of forgery.

Charles Nyambok Owino and Simon Maina are accused of being in possession of 54 fake stamps found at Highway Towers in Nakuru Central Business District.

The stamps were capable of producing stamp impressions for various departments in the county and sub-county offices.

The affected sub-counties include Nakuru East, Nakuru West, Gilgill, Bahati, Njoro, Subukia, Molo and Rongoi in Naivasha.

On the other hand, the departments affected were Lands, Housing and Physical Planning, Sub County Clearance Certificate rates section, Public Health and Finance.

They were arrested on July 22, in room 105 of the building by police who raided the offices.

The police also recovered the 54 stamps in a bag hidden in a trash can, five approved structural drawings and 19 approved architectural drawings with suspected fake stamps.

A laptop, desktop and hard drive were also recovered during the raid and taken as evidence.

The suspects, however, denied all the charges read to them.
Their lawyer, Sylvester Washiali, asked the court to grant them bail on reasonable terms, saying they were law-abiding citizens who were ready to obey the court's orders.

The Senior Principal Magistrate granted them bail in the sum of Sh150,000 with a surety in like sum or alternatively in the sum of Sh50,000 cash bail.

The Nakuru County government filed a police report at Nakuru Central Police Station on 14 June after discovering cases of fake official cash receipts and letters with fake stamps purporting to be issued by the county.
